Werewolves Devlog #1 - Basic Storyline and Environment

Hey everyone! In this post we’ll be starting to go over the story for the full game (which currently has the title of Werewolves) and a bit about where it takes place.

Story

Our story centers around wolves that have been terrorizing a small town. While playing, you’ll learn about the tragic past of the town and about the man that caused it, John Wolfe. No, not the YouTuber, but the mad scientist whose experiments on wolves created a monster.  The story will mostly be told through newspapers, photos, and other documents. We decided on this mode of storytelling as we want the experience to be as immersive as possible. It won’t rely on cutscenes, but rather player agency. The story you have pieced together through what you’ve found might be different from someone else’s. Every document will reveal a different part of the story, but some might be more subtle than others. We’re hoping that players will re-play the game multiple times to get the full picture but it will be possible to find all the clues first try if you take extra time. Speaking of playthroughs, we’re aiming for around 3-5 hour playtime but that’s subject to change.

Environment

Originally, the game was going to take place the forest mentioned briefly in Werewolf: Prelude. However, after testing it out, we decided to move it. Mostly, we wanted it to be more open without sacrificing story. We found it was not only tricky to navigate, but also hard to tell a full story with only a few buildings. The focus is now on the small town of Brownsville. A storm has knocked out the bridges and trapped you in an abandoned town where you’re being stalked by wolves. You must figure what happened to cause the residents to leave as well as find a way out. The map will not be giant, but will have lots of buildings and POI. With this new location, we’ve been able to make it much scarier than Prelude. Exploring will be tense and claustrophobic as the wolves lurk everywhere outside and you’ll need to rely on your flashlight to guide you to safety.

Closing notes :)

We unfortunately were not able to get a video for y’all (as it’s still very rough) but we were able to procure some screenshots! Check those out above. Thanks for reading! Make sure to check back next week for our next devlog discussing gameplay.
